Emergency Eye Health Examinations

If you have an acute eye problem you can see your Optometrist instead of your GP. Your Optometrist has the expertise and necessary equipment to examine, diagnose and often to treat your eye condition.

If referral to the hospital eye clinic is advisable your Optometrist can refer you directly along with the clinical information needed to appropriately prioritise your appointment.

Examples are:

  • Red eye
  • Sticky eye
  • Painful eye
  • Sudden loss of vision
  • Sudden onset of a turn
  • Flashes and floaters

Referral from your doctor is NOT required and the examination is FREE under the National Health Service.

This service is available free on the NHS in Wales provided your Optometrist is accredited to the scheme. This is a needs driven eye health examination NOT a sight test and glasses will NOT be issued.
